Telegram Beginner’s Guide: Start with Chats, Groups and Settings

New to Telegram? Start by learning the difference between an account, a chat and a group. Then choose the client for your device, protect sign-in credentials and review privacy settings before joining public communities. You do not need to configure every feature at once. This guide links to focused walkthroughs for the tasks most new users encounter.

Choose a Telegram client

Telegram lists mobile, desktop and browser apps in its applications directory. Choose the version that matches your device, then inspect the actual download destination and publisher before installing.

If you need Telegram on a computer, compare Desktop and Web. If you want platform-specific installation notes, visit the download center.

Create an account or sign in

Creating an account and adding a device to an existing account are different flows. Confirm which one you need and use a phone number you control. Follow the instructions shown in Telegram rather than relying on an old screenshot; available code delivery options can change.

Keep login codes private. A group admin, bot or support-lookalike should not ask you to send one in chat. Read sign-up and login or the safe sign-in guide for the steps.

Understand chats, groups and channels

Private chats are conversations with individual contacts. Groups support member discussion, while channels are mainly for publishing to subscribers. A channel can link a separate discussion group. Learn the difference in Groups and Channels.

Telegram also supports bots and Mini Apps. These are services with their own operators. Verify them and do not share account codes or unnecessary personal information. Start with bot safety before granting access.

Review privacy and devices

Open Telegram’s current privacy and security settings. Decide who can see your phone number, profile photo and other details. Review active sessions after signing in on a new device, and end sessions on devices you no longer control.

Cloud chats and Secret Chats behave differently across devices. Read multiple-device sessions and Secret Chats before replacing or resetting a phone.

Manage notifications and language

Mute busy groups or channels rather than turning off every important alert. Telegram’s in-app notification settings and your operating system’s permissions work together. See notification settings.

Interface language, keyboard language and translation are separate. Change Telegram’s language in Settings and use your device settings for the keyboard. For Chinese, see set Telegram to Chinese.
