Quick choice
Choose Telegram Web when you need to open Telegram in a browser without installing a computer app, such as on a temporary or shared computer. Choose Telegram Desktop when you want an installed app for regular computer use. Telegram’s applications directory lists two web apps, WebA and WebK, as well as Telegram Desktop for Windows, macOS and Linux and a separate native macOS app.
What matters | Telegram Web | Telegram Desktop |
|---|---|---|
Install an app on the computer | No; it runs in a supported browser | Yes; install the computer app |
Useful for a one-time session | Often convenient | Usually more setup than needed |
Best starting point for daily computer use | Works in the browser | A dedicated app may fit better |
Login safety | Review the browser session and sign out on shared devices | Review active sessions and protect the computer account |
Cloud chats | Available after signing in | Available after signing in |
Secret Chats | Device/session-specific; do not assume they sync from another device | Device-specific; do not assume they sync from another device |
Feature availability can change between client versions. Use the current app’s own settings and Telegram’s documentation instead of relying on a static feature comparison when a particular control matters.
Compare the everyday workflow
The practical difference is where you expect to return to Telegram. With Web, the browser is the container for the session. That can be convenient if you already work in a browser and do not want to install another application. It also means that browser profiles, shared-device policies and saved site data matter. With Desktop, Telegram runs as an application on the computer. It is a more natural fit when you regularly switch between computer work and messaging, but it also means that the computer itself and its operating-system account need to be protected.
Neither choice makes an account anonymous or removes the need to secure it. Both require a sign-in, and both can appear as active sessions in account settings. Think of the choice as an application and workflow preference, not as a way to bypass account controls.
Use Telegram Web for temporary access
Web can be a reasonable option when you are using a computer where installing software is unavailable or not appropriate. Before signing in, check the address bar and confirm the exact site you opened. A search result, QR code or link in a message is not sufficient proof that a page is the correct sign-in destination. Avoid entering your number or scanning a QR code on a page whose address you cannot verify.
On a shared computer, assume that someone else may use the same browser profile later. Do not rely only on closing the tab. Sign out through Telegram, then check your trusted Telegram app’s device list for a session that remains active. Do not save a password or allow the browser to retain a signed-in profile if other people can use the account on that computer. If you cannot determine whether the browser or device is monitored, use a device you control instead.
Web is also useful for checking how a browser-based session behaves before deciding whether you want an installed app. If you only need a short session, the browser may reduce installation steps. If the browser blocks a feature you need or your organization restricts web messaging, use a permitted, trusted device and follow the policy that applies to it.
Use Desktop for recurring computer access
An installed desktop application can be easier to reopen as part of a regular routine. It has its own app entry and runs under the computer account where you installed it. This convenience is most valuable on a personal or managed computer that you use repeatedly, rather than a public device that many people can access.
Before installing, check that the package is intended for your operating system and processor, and identify who publishes the file. Follow the current destination and file details on the device page rather than assuming that a button label alone proves a file’s origin. Telegram’s applications directory lists its client options. An installer should be described as available only when its page provides a real destination and current file information.
After you sign in, review the account’s active sessions just as you would after using Web. If other people use the same computer login, lock the computer when you step away and sign out of Telegram when the session should not remain available. An installed app is not a substitute for a protected operating-system account.
Understand what syncs before choosing
Telegram’s FAQ distinguishes cloud chats from Secret Chats. Cloud chats are available across signed-in devices. Secret Chats are device-specific and are not stored in Telegram Cloud in the same way. Switching to a desktop app does not convert a Secret Chat into a cloud chat, and opening Web does not guarantee that a Secret Chat from another device will appear.
If a particular conversation is important, check what type of chat it is before logging out, resetting a device or removing an app that holds it. A new computer session may be suitable for regular cloud conversations while a device-specific Secret Chat remains on its original device. This difference can explain why a person sees some messages on a new screen but not others.
Do not use the word “sync” as a promise that every setting, local file or chat state is identical in every client. Telegram clients may differ in interface, available features and update timing. For an account-level fact, consult the current Telegram app and its current documentation.
Compare privacy and session controls
On either client, protect sign-in codes and any two-step verification password. Telegram warns users not to share login codes. A person who asks you to forward a code, approve a QR login or install a remote-access tool is asking you to authorize access, not helping you troubleshoot. Use only a sign-in attempt you initiated.
For a device you no longer use, open the account’s device or active-session screen in an app you trust and end that session. If an entry looks unfamiliar, take action to secure the account, but remember that network routing can affect location information. A location label is not definitive evidence of a person’s identity or exact physical position.
The session list is especially important after using Web on a shared machine. It is also useful after changing computers or reinstalling Desktop. When in doubt, end sessions you do not need and sign in again only from a verified app or page. See the account security guide for a fuller checklist and the Web login guide for browser-specific precautions.
Choose by scenario
Use this quick decision process:
If you need a one-time session on a computer where installing software is not allowed, check whether you can use Telegram Web safely.
If you return to Telegram on the same computer every day, compare the available Desktop app for your operating system.
If the computer is shared, managed or potentially monitored, consider whether it is safe to sign in at all. Do not enter account details when you cannot trust the device.
If you need to access a Secret Chat created on another device, neither Web nor Desktop is a workaround for its device-specific behavior.
If a client is missing a feature or displaying a different menu, consult the current app documentation and use the client that supports the task you actually need.
The choice can change over time. You might use Web on a work trip and Desktop at home. Each new sign-in is still a separate session to review, and the security checklist applies regardless of which client you prefer.
How sign-in works
Telegram’s FAQ explains that cloud chats sync when you sign into devices with your account. A new browser or desktop sign-in creates an active session. Check that the page or application is the one you intended to open, follow the sign-in prompts shown by Telegram, and never forward an account login code to a person, website, service or bot.
When a QR sign-in is offered, approve it only from a Telegram app and computer you recognize. If the device is public or shared, do not save credentials, remove the session when finished, and close the browser. For a computer you own, periodically review active sessions and end any you do not recognize.
Cloud chats are not Secret Chats
Do not assume every chat behaves the same across devices. Telegram says cloud chats are available from signed-in devices, while Secret Chats are not part of Telegram Cloud and are specific to the devices where they were created. Logging out of the device holding a Secret Chat can make that chat unavailable there. This is a product distinction, not a limitation that choosing the web or desktop version can bypass.

Frequently asked questions
Is Telegram Web an official Telegram app?
Telegram’s own applications directory lists WebA and WebK. Confirm that you are using the expected Telegram web address and avoid lookalike login pages.
Can I keep Telegram open on my phone and computer?
Telegram supports signing into multiple devices. Cloud chats sync; Secret Chats remain specific to their originating devices.
Which option is safer on a public computer?
Neither option removes the need to protect your session. A browser session avoids installing an app, but you still need to verify the site, avoid saving sign-in data, sign out and close the browser. Do not sign in if you cannot control whether the computer is monitored.
Is a desktop installer available here, or can I sign in on this page?
A desktop download option appears on its device page when a destination has been configured. Telegram Web sign-in takes place in Telegram’s web client, not on this page. Verify the destination address before downloading or signing in.
Can I use Web and Desktop at the same time?
Telegram supports multiple signed-in devices. You can review active sessions in the current app. Whether you keep both clients signed in is a convenience choice; end sessions on computers you no longer control.
Will switching clients transfer every conversation?
Do not assume so. Telegram’s cloud chats sync across signed-in devices, while Secret Chats are device-specific and are not part of Telegram Cloud. Check the chat type and preserve access to the device that holds a Secret Chat before logging out or resetting it.
Should I use Telegram Web on a public computer?
Only if you trust the device and can end the session afterward. Verify the address, do not save account credentials, sign out when finished and review the active-session list from a trusted Telegram app. If you cannot control the computer or its browser profile, do not sign in.
