Use Telegram on Multiple Devices: Sessions, Sync and Sign-Out

Telegram lets you use an account on more than one device. Cloud chats are designed to be available across signed-in clients, while Secret Chats are device-specific. Every new phone, browser or computer can create an active session that you should recognize and manage. Do not assume that closing an app or browser tab ends the session.

Add another device safely

Install or open a Telegram client from a source you can identify. Telegram’s applications directory lists its client families. Confirm that the browser address or publisher matches the app you intended to use.

Start the sign-in from the device you control. Telegram may offer a code or QR-based login according to the current flow. Approve a QR sign-in only when you initiated it and can identify the computer being added. Keep all codes private; a person in a chat should not ask you to forward them.

Understand what syncs

Telegram’s FAQ describes cloud chats as syncing across signed-in devices. This supports moving between a phone, tablet and computer for ordinary cloud conversations. However, not every piece of local data or every setting should be assumed identical across clients. Interfaces and available features can differ by platform.

Secret Chats are device-specific and do not sync like cloud chats. A Secret Chat created on one phone should not be expected to appear on a newly signed-in computer. Before logging out, resetting or replacing a device, review Secret Chats explained if those conversations matter.

Review active sessions

Open Telegram’s Devices or Active Sessions area and compare the list with devices you use. Review the client type, last activity and other details. Network location is only one signal and may not pinpoint a person accurately. If a session belongs to a device you no longer control, terminate it from a trusted session.

Make this review after using a shared computer, changing phones, traveling or receiving an unexpected login alert. If you do not recognize a device, end the session and update account protections. Do not click a link in an alert message unless you verified it independently.

Shared computers and browser sessions

Before signing in on a shared computer, consider whether the browser profile is monitored or accessible to others. Do not save credentials, and sign out through Telegram when you finish. Then check the Devices list from your own phone to confirm the session is gone.

Telegram Web and Telegram Desktop are different clients. A browser session can remain active after you close a tab, and an installed app can remain signed in after you close its window. Compare their trade-offs in Telegram Desktop vs Web.

Organize sessions after device changes

When you replace a phone or computer, sign in on the new device, verify the account and review active sessions. End access to the old device once you are confident you no longer need it. If the old device contains a Secret Chat or local file, understand that data’s device-specific behavior before erasing it.

For a work or family account, keep sessions tied to individual people where possible. Avoid sharing a single account among a team. Group and channel permissions provide better accountability than distributing a login code. If a device is managed by an organization, follow its policy before adding personal sessions.
