Telegram privacy is controlled by several settings rather than a single “private account” switch. Review who can see your phone number, profile photo and other details, how contacts are synced, which groups can add you and which devices remain signed in. Menu names can vary across Android, iOS, Desktop and Web, so use the current app rather than an old screenshot.
Phone-number visibility and discovery
Open Telegram’s Privacy and Security settings and find the phone-number controls. Review both who can see the number and how people who already know it may discover your account. Exceptions can change a broad rule, so check allowed and restricted lists. See phone-number privacy for a deeper explanation.
A public username provides another way for people to find or contact you. It can be useful for a public profile but may increase unsolicited messages. Choose a username intentionally and remember that hiding a phone number does not make an account anonymous.
Profile details, groups and calls
Review who can see your profile photo, last-seen information, bio and other available details. Settings can vary by feature and client. Think about what a person can infer from your username, display name, shared groups and posts, even if your number is hidden.
Check controls for calls, invitations and group additions. If an unknown account repeatedly contacts you, block or report it using Telegram’s current controls. Do not follow a link or send a code to prove your identity.
Contacts and address-book access
Telegram’s contact discovery can involve both the app’s settings and operating-system permissions. Review whether contact syncing is enabled, whether Telegram can access the device’s address book and how to remove synchronized contacts using the current instructions. Consider whether a work or shared-device contact list should be uploaded.
If you only need to reach one person, a username or direct invite may avoid syncing an entire address book. Contact syncing does not remove copies of your number already stored by other people.
Active sessions and account security
Privacy settings do not replace session security. Review Telegram’s Devices or Active Sessions list and end sessions you no longer control. Keep login codes and two-step verification passwords private. Read account security basics and multiple-device management.
Public chats and shared content
Assume that information posted in a public group or channel can be copied, forwarded or captured. A private invite link can also be shared beyond its intended recipient. Avoid posting passwords, login codes, identity documents, private addresses or content another person has not approved.
If you use a bot or Mini App, evaluate the operator separately. Data sent to the service may be processed outside the ordinary person-to-person chat. See bots and privacy.
