Telegram Update Checklist: Check the Client, Source and Account

Updating Telegram can fix issues, add features or change how settings appear. But an update button on an unfamiliar website is not proof that a file is genuine. First identify which Telegram client you use, then update through a source you can verify. Before removing an old app or clearing data, consider whether the device contains a Secret Chat or other local information you need.

Telegram’s applications directory lists its client families. This guide is a repeatable safety checklist, not a live version tracker. For device-specific setup, see Android Telegram setup and iPhone Telegram setup.

Identify the Telegram client you actually use

“Telegram” can refer to different applications: Android, iOS, Telegram Desktop, a separate macOS client, or the WebA and WebK browser apps. An update intended for one platform is not a substitute for another. Check the app name, operating system, publisher and installed version in the client’s About or Settings screen.

On a computer, distinguish Telegram Desktop from a platform-specific macOS app. Their interfaces and feature sets can differ. On a phone, check whether you installed the client from an official app marketplace or from Telegram’s own listed source. Do not rely on a filename alone to identify the product.

If you cannot tell which client is installed, do not overwrite it with a file found through a search advertisement. First confirm the publisher and the source from a trusted page. The download center describes platform choices; actual download destinations must still be verified before use.

Use a source you can verify

Use the client’s built-in update mechanism or a source linked by Telegram for that application. Telegram’s applications directory can help you navigate to the appropriate client. For a marketplace app, confirm the developer or publisher shown on the marketplace listing. For a direct package, check that the domain and file are the ones published by the responsible project.

Download destinations are configured separately for each platform. Before installing a package from any destination, inspect the final URL, publisher, operating system, architecture, version, file size and integrity information where supplied. If those details are absent or inconsistent, do not treat the package as verified.

Avoid modified clients that claim to add “secret” features, remove security limits or make account access easier. A modified package can request excessive permissions or expose sign-in data. Do not disable operating-system protections just to install a file from an unverified source.

Compare version information with the publisher

Read the release note or version information from the application’s publisher. Check that the package is intended for your device and that the version number is plausible for the client. A newer-looking filename is not sufficient evidence. Release numbering may differ across platforms and distribution channels.

If the publisher provides a checksum or signature, use the documented method to verify it. A checksum only helps when compared with a trusted value from the same publisher. Do not copy a hash from a random mirror or assume that a scan result proves the publisher’s identity.

Note the installed version before updating if you are diagnosing a bug. After update, confirm that the About screen shows the expected client and version. If the publisher’s page says that the rollout is staged or limited, do not assume every device can install the same release immediately.

Prepare the account and data before updating

Make sure you can access the phone number associated with the Telegram account and know how to use its current security settings. Keep login codes private. If the client asks you to sign in again after an update, enter the code only in the Telegram app or web client you initiated.

Review device-specific chats and local data before uninstalling or clearing app storage. Telegram Secret Chats are device-specific and do not sync like ordinary cloud chats. If a Secret Chat matters, do not remove or reset the app until you understand what happens to access on that device. Read Secret Chats explained first.

On a shared or work-managed device, check applicable policies before updating. Save any work you need outside Telegram using an approved process. Do not export private conversations to a personal location without permission.

Install and verify the update

Follow the publisher’s instructions for your operating system. Review any permissions or system prompt before accepting it. An ordinary client update should not require you to send a code to a support agent, disable your device lock or install remote-access software.

After installation, open Telegram and confirm the client name, version and account. Check that chats load as expected, notification settings still match your preferences and account devices are familiar. If a feature moved, consult the app’s current help or settings; do not download a second client from an unknown page to restore a menu.

If the update fails, record the exact error, operating system and previous version. Check available storage, network access and publisher instructions. Avoid repeatedly deleting and reinstalling without knowing whether local or device-specific data could be lost.

When an update notice may be suspicious

Be wary of a message that says your account will be deleted unless you download a package immediately. A legitimate update notice should identify the client and publisher and direct you to a source you can verify. Do not follow an installer link from an unsolicited bot, group admin or private message without independently checking it.

Other warning signs include a page asking for your login code before download, a “Telegram security update” distributed as an archive by an unknown account, a file with an unrelated publisher or a request to allow remote control. Close the page and open Telegram’s application directory directly.

If you installed a suspicious package, stop using it for account access. From a clean, trusted device, review Telegram sessions and secure your account. Follow the operating system’s guidance to check or remove unwanted software.

Keep a simple update record

For a personal device, record the client name, version, update date and source. For an organization, keep the approved client list and responsible administrator in a change log. This is useful when an interface changes, a bug appears or a team member reports a different version.

Do not turn a version number into a claim that an app is “the safest” or “officially recommended” unless the publisher says so and the evidence is current. A version record helps identify what is installed; it does not certify that a device is uncompromised.

Troubleshoot after an update

If a feature moved, first confirm which client and version you opened. Telegram Desktop, macOS and Web clients can differ in menus and release timing. Check the client’s own help or the publisher’s release notes rather than installing an unofficial “classic” build from a mirror. If a setting is unavailable in the current client, do not assume your account is broken.

If the app crashes or fails to connect, note the operating system, client name, installed version and the last action before the error. Check network access and available storage, then follow the publisher’s troubleshooting steps. Avoid deleting local data before you know what is backed up or device-specific. A Secret Chat may remain tied to the original device, and a reinstall may not restore it.

If a notification or permission changed after an update, check Telegram’s in-app setting and the operating-system permission independently. Do not grant new permissions simply because an update notice says they are required; confirm the feature you are trying to use and read the system dialog.

Check whether an update is genuine

Open the publisher’s release page directly instead of following an unexpected message link. Compare the client name, version, platform and publication date. If the publisher provides a signature, checksum or marketplace identity, use the documented verification method. If you cannot establish the origin, wait and use a known update route rather than installing immediately.

An update prompt can also be a phishing lure. A browser page that asks you to sign in with your phone number before providing a package may be harvesting account details. A legitimate client update should not ask you to send a Telegram login code to a person or bot. Stop and return to Telegram’s applications directory if the source looks inconsistent.

Keep a verifiable update record

For a direct installer, keep the publisher’s page open while verifying the file. Compare the downloaded package’s displayed name and size with the information published there, and retain the trusted source link for future reference. If the details do not match, do not run the installer; delete it using the operating system’s normal process and contact the publisher through a known channel.

For a managed fleet, record which client version was approved, who checked the source and which operating systems are supported. This is useful when a user reports a different interface or an update failure. Keep the record limited to software and device facts; it should not contain account codes or private chat data.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Telegram app needs an update?

Check the app’s built-in update indicator or the trusted publisher/marketplace listing for your exact client. Availability may differ by operating system and rollout.

Should I download Telegram from any site that has the latest version?

No. Verify the exact client, domain, publisher and version. A page claiming “latest” is not proof that a file is genuine or current.

Will updating delete my messages?

Ordinary cloud chats are designed to sync across signed-in devices, but do not assume every local or device-specific item behaves the same. Review Secret Chats and local data before uninstalling or clearing storage.

Does Telegram need my login code to update?

An update source should not ask you to send a code to a person or website. If Telegram requests sign-in in the client you opened, enter a code only in that active Telegram flow.

What if the update is unavailable in my region or app store?

Check Telegram’s applications directory and publisher instructions for the client you use. Do not use an unknown mirror or modified installer as a shortcut.
