Telegram on iPhone and iPad: First-Run Setup and Privacy Checks

Setting up Telegram on an iPhone or iPad involves more than installing the app. Confirm the client source, sign in using the active Telegram flow, choose which iOS permissions to grant and review privacy and notification settings. You do not need to accept every permission to start using Telegram. Grant access when a feature needs it and check the scope shown by iOS.

This is a first-run setup guide for Apple mobile devices. For client sources, see the iOS download page. For Android, use the Android setup guide.

Confirm the app and its publisher

Telegram’s applications directory lists the clients and links to their sources. If you install through the App Store, check the publisher name and product listing. Be aware that Telegram offers more than one Mac client; iPhone and iPad instructions do not automatically apply to macOS.

Inspect the final destination and publisher details before installing. A button labelled Download does not by itself verify a file. Do not install a profile, modified client or unrelated application just to enable Chinese or access an account.

Open the app directly from the iPhone or iPad and check that the sign-in screen is the one you intended. A website opened from an unsolicited message should not receive your Telegram code.

Sign in or register with the correct flow

If you already have a Telegram account, choose the existing-account sign-in flow. If you are creating an account, follow the registration path. Confirm the country code and number belong to you, especially if your iPhone uses dual SIM or eSIM. Telegram decides which code-delivery options are available; follow the instructions and timer shown in the current app.

Keep the login code private. Telegram’s FAQ warns users not to share it. Do not send the code to a contact, bot, group admin, App Store support account or website. A code should be entered only in the active Telegram sign-in you initiated.

If the code is delayed, check the number, active line, message filters and a trusted existing Telegram session before requesting another. See Telegram login code troubleshooting.

Review iOS permissions when a feature needs them

iOS may ask Telegram for access to contacts, photos, camera, microphone, local network or notifications depending on what you do. Read each prompt and connect it to the task. For example, camera access may be needed when scanning a QR code; microphone access may be needed while recording a voice message. A permission for one feature does not mean the app needs broad access at all times.

Use iOS Settings to review Telegram’s permissions later. iOS may offer options such as selected photos, limited access or access only while using the app. Choose the narrowest option that works for the feature. Menu wording changes over time, so use the current iPhone Settings interface and Apple’s support guidance.

If a prompt appears unrelated to your action, deny it and verify the client source. Permission prompts do not prove that an app is official. Do not install a configuration profile from a stranger to “complete” Telegram setup.

Decide how contacts are synced

Telegram may offer to sync your iPhone contacts so you can find people you know. Decide whether this convenience is worth granting access to your address book. Review both iOS Contacts permission and Telegram’s current in-app contact controls. If you disable access, names or suggestions may change; consult Telegram’s current instructions if you need to manage contacts previously synchronized.

Consider whether your address book contains work, family or customer details that should not be uploaded to a personal account. If you need to contact one person, a public username or direct link may be enough. On a shared iPad, confirm which Apple account and contacts are active.

Review phone-number visibility separately. Contact syncing, whether someone already knows your number and your public Telegram username are different discovery paths. See Telegram phone-number privacy for the key distinctions.

Set notifications and lock-screen previews

Telegram has notification controls inside the app, and iOS separately controls alerts, banners, sounds, badges, summaries and lock-screen presentation. Decide which chats should interrupt you, then configure the Telegram and iOS layers. A muted group in Telegram is not the same setting as an iOS Focus mode, and a notification banner does not determine whether a message was delivered.

If you want fewer alerts, mute or customize a busy group or channel instead of turning off all Telegram notifications. If you do not want message content visible while the phone is locked, review the iOS preview setting. Consider who can see your screen in public or at work.

If alerts are missing, check Telegram’s chat settings, iOS notification permission, Focus schedules, network and background behavior one at a time. Use the notification management guide before reinstalling the app.

Configure media downloads and local storage

Review Telegram’s Data and Storage controls for automatic media downloads, if available in your current client. Decide how photos, videos and files should behave on mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. Automatic download saves taps but does not verify the sender or file contents.

Before opening an unexpected installer, archive or document, check who sent it and what it is supposed to be. Use the Telegram file safety guide for a closer review. An app installation on iOS normally follows Apple’s distribution model; do not install a certificate, profile or remote management tool sent by an unknown Telegram account.

If the app uses substantial storage, check Telegram’s cache controls and iOS storage settings. Clearing cache differs from deleting a chat or account. Before offloading, deleting or reinstalling Telegram, understand that Secret Chats are device-specific and may not restore like cloud chats. Read Secret Chats explained if those conversations matter.

Review account security and active devices

Open Telegram’s device or active session settings and confirm every device is familiar. End sessions on computers, browsers or phones you no longer control. If you sign in on a shared computer, signing out from the browser and checking the active-session list are both prudent.

Review two-step verification and recovery details. Use a unique password and keep the recovery email account secure. Never send a code or password to a person who claims to be Telegram support. For the full routine, see Telegram account security basics.

Protect the iPhone or iPad with its passcode and keep iOS updated. Review lock-screen notification previews and any shared-device arrangement. The privacy settings in Telegram cannot protect messages displayed on an unlocked device.

Use Telegram in Chinese on iPhone

To change Telegram’s display language, open the app’s Settings and locate Language. Select the Chinese option shown by the current iOS version and read any confirmation before applying it. Changing the interface language does not change the iPhone keyboard or translate incoming messages.

If Chinese is not in the built-in menu, check Telegram’s translation platform and evaluate any custom pack carefully. Avoid pages that require a code or separate installer to change language. See how to set Telegram to Chinese and third-party language pack safety.

Configure the iPhone keyboard separately

If your goal is to type Chinese, add or select the keyboard in iOS Settings. That does not change Telegram’s interface language. Conversely, selecting Chinese in Telegram does not install a keyboard or translate the messages you receive.

When entering a username, phone number, invite link or verification code, check every character before continuing. Autocorrect and text replacement can alter spelling or punctuation. Do not install an unknown keyboard profile or share clipboard access with a third-party app just to type in Telegram.

Prepare the iPhone for a handoff or replacement

Before trading in, erasing or giving away an iPhone or iPad, review Telegram’s active sessions and sign out where appropriate. Preserve any device-specific conversation or local data you need according to the rules that apply to it. Secret Chats do not behave like cloud chats when you move to another device.

After signing in on the replacement phone, confirm the active-session list and review notification previews, Face ID or passcode settings and app permissions. Remove the old device session once you are confident the account is working on the new phone. Do not share a login code with a repair shop or migration service.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to give Telegram access to all my iPhone contacts?

No. Decide whether syncing is useful and review iOS Contacts permission and Telegram’s own controls. You can use usernames or links to contact specific people.

Why are notifications missing on my iPhone?

Check the individual chat’s mute setting, Telegram’s notification preferences, iOS app notifications, Focus and notification summaries, and network access.

Is Telegram downloaded from a third-party link official?

Not automatically. Verify the final destination and publisher. Use Telegram’s applications directory or an identifiable marketplace listing.

Will Telegram chats appear on a new iPhone?

Cloud chats are designed to sync across signed-in devices. Secret Chats are device-specific, so understand their behavior before resetting or replacing the old phone.

Can I change Telegram’s language without changing iOS language?

Yes. Telegram has its own language setting in the app; the exact location may vary. It is separate from iOS system language and keyboard settings.

Check iCloud and device-sharing expectations

Telegram’s account sessions are separate from iCloud device backups. Do not assume that every Telegram conversation or local file will be restored by restoring the iPhone. Cloud chats are available through Telegram when you sign in, while Secret Chats are device-specific. Before wiping a phone, identify which data is stored in Telegram’s cloud and which is local to that device.

If the iPhone or iPad is shared with a family member, use separate device profiles or accounts where available and agree who can open Telegram. Review Face ID or passcode access and lock-screen previews. A person with access to an unlocked device may read messages even if the phone-number visibility setting is restrictive.

For managed business phones, follow the organization’s policy on personal messaging, app distribution and backup. Do not move customer information into a personal iCloud account or export chats to work around restrictions. Ask the device administrator for an approved setup if policy is unclear.
