Telegram on Android: First-Run Setup, Permissions and Privacy

After installing Telegram on Android, take a few minutes to confirm the app, sign in safely and decide which device permissions make sense for you. You do not need to grant every permission immediately. Start with the task you want to perform, review each request in context and keep sign-in codes private. Android manufacturers may arrange system settings differently, so use the labels on your current phone rather than copying an old screenshot.

This page focuses on setup after installation. For file sources and platform choices, use the Android download page; for comparison with an iPhone, see the iPhone setup guide.

Verify the Android app before signing in

Confirm that the application name and publisher match the client you intended to install. Telegram’s applications directory lists its Android options. If you installed from a marketplace, check the publisher shown on the listing. If you installed a direct package, independently verify the download source, version and file details.

An icon or filename can be copied. Do not assume that every site with “Telegram APK” in its title distributes a verified package. Check the exact destination and publisher shown for any Android download; a button label alone cannot verify a file. If the app asks you to disable Android protection or install an unrelated service, stop and review the publisher’s instructions.

Open the app and check that the sign-in flow is the one you expect. Do not enter a login code into a browser page opened by a stranger. Use only the Telegram client you intentionally installed.

Sign in or create an account

If you already have a Telegram account, choose the sign-in flow and use the phone number currently associated with it. If you are creating an account for the first time, follow the new-account prompts. Verify the country selection and number before continuing. Telegram’s current screen decides which code-delivery steps are available.

Keep the code private. Telegram’s FAQ warns users not to share login codes. Do not send one to a group admin, bot, website or person claiming to be support. If Android shows a permission or notification prompt during sign-in, read it separately; granting notification access is not a substitute for authentication.

If the code does not arrive, check the number, active SIM, connectivity and trusted signed-in devices before asking again. Use the Telegram login code checklist for a more complete sequence.

Review Android permissions one at a time

Android may ask for access to contacts, camera, microphone, photos or files depending on the feature you use. You can assess each request when it appears. Ask what task requires it: scanning a QR code needs camera access while scanning; recording a voice message needs microphone access while recording; viewing or sending a selected media item may need the corresponding media permission or picker.

Grant only what you need and understand how to revoke it later in Android’s system settings. Denying an optional permission may limit a particular feature without preventing every other part of Telegram from working. If a prompt appears unrelated to the action you started, cancel and verify the app source.

Permission names differ across Android versions and manufacturers. Android may offer selected-photo access, one-time permission or only-while-using options. Choose the narrowest scope that supports your task. Recheck permissions after a major system update or when you change how you use the app.

Decide how contacts are handled

Telegram may offer to sync contacts so you can find people you know. Decide whether that convenience is worth allowing access to your address book. Review both Android’s Contacts permission and Telegram’s current in-app contact or privacy settings. Turning off one control may not undo information that has already been synced; consult Telegram’s current help to manage stored contacts.

If you only need to contact one person, a username or a direct invite may be enough. Do not upload a work or family address book to a personal device without considering privacy expectations. On a shared phone, check whose contacts are in the operating-system account.

Review Telegram’s phone-number visibility and discovery settings as well. Contact syncing, the number another person already has and your public username are different ways an account may be found. See phone number privacy on Telegram.

Set notification preferences

Choose which private chats, groups and channels should interrupt you. Telegram has in-app notification controls, while Android separately controls whether the app may show notifications, badges, lock-screen previews and sounds. Configure the two layers: a muted group in Telegram cannot always be fixed by enabling all Android notifications, and Android’s Do Not Disturb can suppress alerts even when Telegram is configured to notify.

If a group is busy, mute or customize that conversation rather than disabling every Telegram alert. Decide whether message previews should appear on a locked screen. Consider notification summaries, battery optimization and background restrictions if alerts arrive late. Use the notification management guide for ordered troubleshooting.

Test your settings with a normal message and verify that at least one trusted device receives important notifications. Avoid third-party apps that promise to “unlock” Telegram notifications by requesting broad accessibility or notification-listener access.

Control media downloads and storage

Telegram may offer automatic media download controls based on chat type, network connection or file size. Review the current Data and Storage settings. Decide what should download over mobile data, Wi-Fi or roaming, and whether large videos or documents should wait until you choose them.

Automatic download is a convenience setting, not a safety check. A file delivered by Telegram can still be misleading or harmful. Verify the sender and publisher before opening or installing an attachment. Use the file download safety checklist for installers, archives and unexpected media.

If storage becomes tight, review Telegram’s cache controls and Android’s available storage before deleting data. Cache removal is not the same as deleting a chat, and different content types may be stored locally or in the cloud. Preserve files you need in an approved location before clearing app data or uninstalling.

Secure sessions and privacy

Once signed in, review Telegram’s active devices or sessions. Confirm that each entry is yours and end sessions on devices you no longer control. If you use a tablet or work computer, sign out when appropriate. Do not assume that closing an app or clearing a notification ends a session.

Review two-step verification and recovery information in Telegram’s current security settings. Use a unique password and keep any recovery email secure. The account security basics guide covers a full review.

Set who can see your phone number, profile photo and other details. A public username may make you easier to contact even if your number is hidden. Review profile details before posting in public groups and remember that members can copy messages or media you share.

Use widgets, background and battery controls thoughtfully

Android manufacturers may limit background work to preserve battery. If messages arrive only after opening Telegram, check the phone’s battery optimization or background activity controls for Telegram. Follow Android or manufacturer documentation and change one setting at a time. Do not disable broad battery or security protections unless you understand the impact.

If a feature depends on location or microphone access, grant it for the specific task and review it afterward. Do not keep permissions enabled solely because an old guide says Telegram needs them at all times. The app may request access again when you use a feature.

Configure the Android keyboard and language separately

If you want to type in Chinese or another language, add the keyboard or input method through Android’s system settings. This is independent of Telegram’s interface language. Changing Telegram menus to Chinese does not install a keyboard, and switching the keyboard does not translate the app’s menus.

When entering a username, phone number or link, inspect the final characters before submitting. Predictive text and autocorrect can replace names or punctuation. If a sign-in code arrives by another route, enter it only in the Telegram flow you initiated and never copy it into a keyboard helper or third-party translation app.

Set up the device for shared use

If other people can unlock the phone, use Android’s screen lock and decide what Telegram content may appear in notification previews. Review whether the app is listed in a work profile or managed space. Do not sign in to a personal account on a public or borrowed device unless you can protect the session and sign out afterward.

After adding Telegram to a new Android phone, inspect active sessions from the account’s Devices setting. End sessions on old phones you no longer control. If the old phone contains a Secret Chat, understand that it is device-specific before you erase or trade in the device.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to allow Telegram to access all my contacts?

No. Decide whether contact syncing is useful and review Android’s permission and Telegram’s contact controls. You can often use usernames or links instead.

Why are Telegram notifications delayed on Android?

Check Telegram’s chat and global notification settings, Android app permissions, Do Not Disturb, network access and device battery restrictions one by one.

Is an APK from a Telegram group safe?

Not because it came from a group. Verify the publisher and source independently and avoid installing a package that asks you to disable protection.

Can I use Telegram on Android and Desktop together?

Telegram supports multiple devices. Sign in through a client you can identify and review the active session list afterward.

Should I clear data if the app has a problem?

Not as a first step. Check the error and preserve any device-specific data or Secret Chats before removing app data or reinstalling.
