Telegram for Android: Download and Setup Guide

Choose an Android installation route

Telegram lists an Android app on its applications page and provides a direct Android download page. Availability and installation steps can differ by device, Android version, region and store access. Use the Android-specific route rather than downloading a desktop installer or an iOS app.

The download button points to an APK currently hosted on this site’s public domain. Its presence does not establish who published or signed the file. Before opening any Android package, confirm the destination, publisher, app identity and version. If the publisher provides a signature or checksum, follow its verification instructions. Do not install a package from a page that hides its publisher or asks you to disable device protections without a clear, verifiable reason.

Before you install

  1. Check that the device runs a compatible version of Android and has enough free storage.

  2. Confirm the app name and publisher on the destination page; look for unexpected spelling or an unrelated publisher.

  3. Review the version and update date shown by the source. A download page should identify the file rather than make an unsupported “latest version” claim.

  4. If installing a package outside a store, understand which Android setting authorizes that source. Grant permission only for the action you intend, and revoke it afterward if you no longer need it.

  5. Avoid repackaged APKs, “mod” builds and files delivered through an unsolicited chat or bot.

Install and open the app

Follow the prompts for the route you selected. Android menus vary across manufacturers, so the exact wording for package permissions may differ. If Android warns that the package cannot be installed, stop and check the file type, device compatibility and source instead of bypassing the warning automatically.

After installation, open the app and review the sign-in screen before entering your number. A login code is for your Telegram account; Telegram’s FAQ says those codes should not be shared with another person or bot. If a site, support agent or bot asks you to forward it, do not do so.

Notifications, storage and sessions

If notifications do not appear, check Android’s app notification permission, the app’s own notification settings, battery restrictions and any active Do Not Disturb schedule. Menu labels vary by Android release and device manufacturer.

If storage is low, review Telegram’s storage usage and cache settings before deleting local files. Clearing a cache is not the same as logging out. Cloud chats sync across signed-in devices, but Telegram says Secret Chats are device-specific and are not stored in Telegram Cloud. Do not sign out of a device if you need to retain a Secret Chat there.

After adding the Android app, review active sessions from Telegram’s privacy and security settings. Terminate sessions you do not recognize and consider enabling 2-Step Verification with a protected recovery email.

Common Android setup problems

The package will not install

Check whether the download completed, whether the file is an Android package, whether the device is compatible, and whether the selected source is trustworthy. If Android reports a package conflict or signature problem, do not uninstall another app or bypass the warning until you understand what the message means.

I cannot find the app after installation

Use the Android app drawer search, then check whether installation completed successfully in system settings. A browser download notification alone does not confirm the app was installed.

I did not receive a login code

Check Telegram’s own sign-in screen and the active Telegram sessions on your other devices. Telegram may deliver a code inside an existing Telegram session rather than by SMS. Follow the official in-app prompts; never give a code to a third party.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Android APK the same as the Play Store app?

Telegram publishes Android app options and says its apps support reproducible builds. Check the current details on Telegram’s applications page and compare the exact source you intend to use; do not assume two files are equivalent without verifying their publisher information.

Can I use Telegram on Android and a computer at the same time?

Yes, Telegram supports using the same account on multiple devices. Ordinary cloud chats sync. Secret Chats do not sync to other devices and remain tied to their originating device.

Where can I get help with account access?

Use the prompts and help links in the current Telegram app or on Telegram’s website for account-specific access. This page cannot inspect your account, retrieve a login code or change a sign-in requirement.
