Telegram for macOS: Download and Setup Guide

Telegram has more than one Mac app option

Telegram lists both Telegram Desktop for macOS and a native macOS client. Its FAQ also describes differences between the macOS app and Telegram Lite. These names refer to different app choices, so do not assume that every button labelled “Telegram for Mac” downloads the same product. Confirm the exact app name, publisher and platform on the destination before continuing.

The app lineup, Mac requirements and available download routes can change. This page does not promise a specific current version or file size. When a Mac download destination is configured, use the app information displayed there to identify what you are installing.

How to choose

Telegram’s own FAQ notes that the macOS apps differ in design and functionality. Check the current product descriptions rather than relying on an old comparison or the app icon alone.

Before opening a Mac download

Confirm that the package is intended for macOS and compatible with your Mac. Check the address bar, app name, publisher information and version details supplied by the source. If macOS displays a security warning, do not bypass it solely because an unrelated download page instructs you to. Confirm the source and signing information first.

If the app is distributed as a disk image or archive, make sure the download completed and that the file name matches what the source described. Delete unexpected duplicate or incomplete files rather than repeatedly opening them. Keep macOS and the app updated using a source whose identity you can verify.

Sign in without exposing your account

Follow the sign-in prompts inside the app. Telegram may deliver an account login code to an existing signed-in Telegram device; check the verified Telegram service chat if the screen says the code was sent there. Do not share the code with anyone, including a support agent, website or bot.

Review active sessions after connecting a new Mac. End sessions you no longer recognize or use. Cloud chats sync across signed-in devices; Secret Chats are device-specific and are not part of Telegram Cloud. Signing out can make a Secret Chat unavailable on the device where it was created.

Common Mac questions

Is Telegram Desktop the same as the native macOS client?

No. Telegram’s FAQ and applications directory list a Telegram Desktop client and a native macOS option. Review the current descriptions and choose the app matching your needs.

Can I use Telegram Web instead?

Yes, Telegram lists WebA and WebK browser apps. A web session can be convenient when you do not want to install an app, but you still need to verify the login page and protect the session, especially on a shared Mac.

Does this page provide an official Mac installer?

A Mac download button appears on this page only when a destination has been configured. Verify its publisher and package details before downloading or opening any file.
