Telegram Bots and Privacy: Data, Permissions and Safe Use

Telegram bots can automate tasks, answer commands and open interactive Mini Apps. They can also receive information that you send to them and may have access to some group messages depending on their configuration and context. A bot’s presence in Telegram does not prove that its operator is trustworthy or that its data practices meet your needs.

What a bot receives

When you send a message, command, file or button action to a bot, that information is processed by the bot’s service. A bot may also receive context needed to perform a task. Read its description and privacy information before sharing personal data. Do not send passwords, login codes, recovery details or private conversations unless you have a verified, appropriate reason—and never share Telegram sign-in codes with a bot.

Telegram’s Bots FAQ describes the platform’s bot behavior. Privacy mode can affect which group messages a bot receives, but it is not a certification that the bot operator stores nothing or that a service is secure. Check the actual task, group settings and bot implementation.

Review group visibility and admin rights

If you add a bot to a group, understand the difference between being a member and an administrator. An admin bot may receive broader access and perform management actions based on the rights granted. Review each permission and grant only what its job requires. Remove access when the workflow ends.

Group members should assume that messages explicitly sent to a bot are processed by that service. Avoid sharing sensitive data in a group simply because the bot is not visibly replying. See Telegram bot permissions and safety for a detailed permission checklist.

Mini Apps and external links

A Mini App can appear inside Telegram while being operated by a separate service. Review who runs it, what information it requests and whether a payment or account action makes sense. Check external domains before entering credentials. The embedded interface does not automatically make a service official or safe.

If a bot offers an installer or downloadable archive, check the publisher and source separately. Telegram message delivery does not verify the package. Never install a client to “unlock” a bot or reveal a login code.

Protect account credentials

Telegram’s FAQ warns users not to share login codes. Treat requests from bots, group administrators or support-lookalike accounts as suspicious. Do not scan QR codes that you did not initiate, approve a device you do not recognize or provide a two-step verification password in chat.

If you already shared a code, review active sessions from a trusted device and end sessions you do not recognize. Change account protections through Telegram’s current controls. Removing a bot from a group does not end a separate account session or erase data already sent to its operator.

Choose a bot with clear purpose

Before using a bot, ask who maintains it, what task it performs, what data it needs and how to reach its operator. If the answer is vague, use a different service or perform the task through a known website. A familiar name or logo is not identity proof.

Use a low-risk command first. Stop if the bot changes its purpose, sends unrelated links, requests broader admin rights or pressures you to act quickly. Group owners can record the bot’s purpose and permissions and set a review date.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bot read all messages in a group?

Visibility depends on Telegram’s current privacy mode, bot status and message context. Check current documentation and group settings; do not assume the bot sees everything or nothing.

Is a Telegram bot an official Telegram service?

Bots are built and operated by developers or organizations using Telegram’s platform. Verify the individual operator and data practices.

Can I send a login code to a bot to verify my account?

No. Keep the code private and use Telegram’s own sign-in flow.

Does opening a Mini App share my information?

It may process information needed for its feature. Review the operator and privacy notice before submitting anything sensitive.
